Brazilian Funk (Funk Carioca) is a high-energy music and dance style that originated in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1980s. It’s heavily influenced by Miami bass, hip-hop, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, creating a powerful, percussive sound with infectious beats. The genre is known for its bold lyrics, bass-heavy beats, and signature dance moves that emphasize hip and lower body movement.
Key Elements of Brazilian Funk:
✅ Music: Fast-paced, bass-driven, with electronic beats and catchy rhythms.
✅ Dance Moves: Includes famous moves like Passinho, Quadradinho, Sarrada, and Arrocha, focusing on footwork, hip movement, and freestyle elements.
✅ Culture & Expression: A form of social and artistic expression in Brazilian communities, often reflecting urban life, identity, and empowerment.
✅ Global Influence: It has gained international popularity, influencing artists like Anitta, Ludmilla, and Kevin O Chris, and even merging with reggaeton, hip-hop, and pop music.

Get to know Leo
Born and raised in Brazil, Leo started dancing for fun at school presentations but soon was spotted by a dance teacher who invited him to join one of the famous dance groups in Brazil called "Tribo Cia de Dança", in 2006. There, he was introduced to hip-hop, street jazz, and dance hall. With time, he started to introduce the same dance styles to kids as a regular teacher for years in different dance studios.
He also participated in several dance festivals all over Brazil, competitions with the dance crew, and was a backup dancer for famous drag queens in nightclubs shows. He participated as a backup dancer in the 2019 San Francisco LGBTQIA+ Pride Parade with one of the most famous Brazilian artists today, Pabllo Vittar. Recently, he came back to Pride Parade 2022 again in the main stage, with the brazilian drag queen, Starya.
Participate in many brazilian parties as dance director and backup dancer. He is passionate about his culture and he uses dance to bring his Brazilian community together, lessening the effects of inevitable homesickness.
